Crack/cocaine in Alabama
Cocaine and crack cocaine pose a significant drug threat in the state of Alabama. Violence associated with cocaine distribution cripples many of Alabama's lower income neighborhoods.
According to the 2003-2004 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 258,000 (7%) of Alabama citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. Of that 258,000, 80,000 (2.16%) have had past year cocaine use.
According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 10% of Alabama 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. In 2003 a survey of High School Students Using Drugs in Alabama found that 7.1% of students surveyed have used cocaine.
As of April 2006, the Alabama Department of Corrections population was 28,105. Approximately 17% of the population was in custody for committing drug crimes. Approximately 232.3 kilograms of cocaine were seized by federal agencies in Alabama in 2005. In 2003 32.8% of Federally-Sentenced Drug Defendants in Alabama had crack cocaine involvement and 17.4% powder cocaine involvement.

Additional 2003-2004 NSDUH results indicate that 109,000 (2.94%) Alabama citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse in the past year. Approximately 68,000 (1.82%) reported past year illicit drug dependence. Approximately 21.8% had been received treatment for cocaine in 2004 alone.
According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 92,000 (2.48%) reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the last year.
