Cocaine and crack cocaine pose a significant drug threat in the state of Alabama. Violence associated with cocaine distribution cripples many of Alabama's lower income neighborhoods. According to the 2003-2004 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 258,000 (7%) of Alabama citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. Of that 258,000, 80,000 (2.16%) have had past year cocaine use.

According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 10% of Alabama 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. In 2003 a survey of High School Students Using Drugs in Alabama found that 7.1% of students surveyed have used cocaine.

According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 92,000 (2.48%) reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the last year.
