Cocaine/crack in Arkansas
Powder and crack cocaine are significant problems to Arkansas because of their relation to street gang violence, especially in inner city areas. The distribution of street gangs to non-traditional areas combined with the availability of crack throughout Arkansas has led to it spread across the state and into many suburban and rural areas.

According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH, approximately 170,000 (7.54%) of Arkansas citizens (ages 12 and older) reported past month use of an illicit drug, 71,000 (3.14%) Arkansas citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse with in the past year. Approximately 48,000 (2.13%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

Out of the 170,000 citizens, 43,000 (1.91%) reported past year cocaine use. 2003-2004 results report that 4,000 (1.52%) 12 to 17 year old have had past year cocaine use.

Hundreds oh kilograms of cocaine are seized each year on Arkansas' interstate highways. In 2005 125.3 kilograms of cocaine were seized. During 2005, the drug enforcement Administration (DEA) made 341 arrests in Arkansas. During 2003, 30.5% of the federally sentenced offenders in Arkansas had committed a drug offense. The majority of these drug cases involve crack cocaine. During 2004 there were 12,083 adults and 1,054 juvenile drug arrests in Arkansas. The majority of these drug arrests, for both adults and juveniles were for drug possession. In 2004 9 juveniles and 355 adults were arrested for the sale of cocaine. 24 juveniles and 1,013 adults were arrested for possession of cocaine.

As of December 31, 2004 injection drug use was related to 555 AIDS cases and 883 HIV cases in Arkansas.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005 there were 12,862 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Arkansas. 1,625 were struggling with crack cocaine use and 378 for cocaine use in other ways. According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 65,000 (2.9%) Arkansas citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
