Cocaine is readily available throughout the state with Los Angeles remaining one of the nations' largest cocaine transshipment and distribution centers. According to the NSDUH approximately 2.6 million (8.92%) California citizens (ages 12or older) reported past months use of an illicit drug.735, 000 (2.55%) reported cocaine use. In 2003-2004 the NSDUH found that 904,000 (3.14%) California citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse. Approximately 609,000 (2.11%) reported past year illicit drug dependence. According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 387,000 (12.05%) California 12-17 year olds reported use of an illicit drug. 52,000 (1.61%) used cocaine.7.6% of eleventh graders have reported use of cocaine. 4.8% reported current use.

In 2005 the DEA made 2,794 drug arrests in California. There were 124,589 adult misdemeanor arrests for drug offenses during 2004. There were 15,609 juvenile arrests for misdemeanor drug offenses in 2004 alone. In 2005 6,038.9 kilograms were seized by federal agencies in California. During 2005 25.7% of the federally-sentenced defendants in California committed a drug related offense. 298 (19.1%) involved cocaine.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005, there were 170,299 drug/alcohol treatment admissions in California. 15,027 (8.8%) were for crack cocaine, 3,104 (1.8%) were for the use of powder cocaine. According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH data approximately 861,000 (2.99%) California citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
