Cocaine/crack use in Georgia
Cocaine and crack cocaine continue to be among the most widely available drugs throughout Georgia. Bulk quantities of powder cocaine are usually transported into the state and then converted into crack cocaine by local wholesalers.

According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH approximately 560,000 (8%) Georgia citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. 156,000 (2.22%) reported past year cocaine use. Additional 2003-2003 NSDUH results indicate that 197,000 (2.82%) Georgia citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 125,000 (1.78%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the NSDUH data approximately 72,000 (9.5%) Georgia 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 11,000 (1.43%) reported past year cocaine use. Approximately 33.3% of the high school students reported being offered, sold, or given an illegal drug on school property within the past year. 7.1% high school students have used cocaine, 3.1% reported current cocaine use.

In 2005 2,026.5 kilograms of cocaine were seized by federal agencies. During 2003, 33.4% of the federally sentenced defendants in Georgia had committed a drug offense. Approximately 32% of the drug offenses involved crack cocaine.

Who attempts at getting help

According to the NSDUH data, approximately 175,000 (2.5%) reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year. During 2004, there were 31,233 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Georgia.
