The wide spread availability of powdered cocaine and the distribution and abuse of crack cocaine are primary illicit drug threat in Louisiana.

According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH approximately 278,000 (7.66%) of Louisiana citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug.

90,000 (2.47%) reported past year use of cocaine. Additional 2003-2004 NSDUH results indicate that 121,000 (3.32%) Louisiana's citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 83,000 (2.29%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 10.08% of Kansas 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 6,000 (1.37%) reported past year cocaine use.

In 2005 Federal agencies seized 246 kilograms of cocaine. Approximately 38.6%, 2003 federally sentenced defendants, committed drug offenses. Approximately 42% of the drug cases involved crack cocaine.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005, there were 24,608 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Louisiana. 1,534 were for use of cocaine and 4,878 for use of crack cocaine. According to the NSDUH data approximately 113,000 (3.12%) Louisiana citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
