Cocaine/crack cocaine in Maine
Cocaine is available throughout Maine in fractional-ounce to kilogram quantities. The popularity of crack cocaine continues to increase in southern and central Maine communities.

According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH approximately 107,000 (9%) of Maine citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug.

28,000 (2.48%) reported past year use of cocaine. Additional 2003-2004 NSDUH results indicate that 38,000 (3.34%) Maine's citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 25,000 (2.18%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH data, approximately 14% of Maine 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 2,000 (1.89%) reported past year cocaine use.

In 2005 Federal agencies seized 2.2 kilograms of cocaine.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005, there were 13,768 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Maine. 395 were for use of cocaine and 365 for use of crack cocaine. According to the NSDUH data approximately 35,000 (3.1%) Kansas citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
