Cocaine/crack use in Michigan
Cocaine and crack cocaine continue to be among the most widely available drugs throughout Michigan. The larger metropolitan areas of Michigan continue to experience high levels of cocaine trafficking and abuse.

According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH approximately 730,000 (9%) Michigan citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. 199,000 (2.38%) reported past year cocaine use. Additional 2003-2003 NSDUH results indicate that 261,000 (3.12%) Michigan citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 183,000 (2.19%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the NSDUH data approximately 11% Michigan 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 14,000 (1.55%) reported past year cocaine use.

During 2006, 40% of federally-sentenced defendants in Michigan were charged with drug offenses. 114 (23.3%) involved powder cocaine. 128 (26.2%) involved crack cocaine

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005 there were 57,453 admissions to alcohol/drug treatment in Michigan. 1,698 (3%) were for use of cocaine and 8,307 (14.5%) were for use of crack cocaine. According to 2004-2005 NSDUH data approximately 231,000 (2.75%) Michigan citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
