According to the 2003-2004 data from the NSDUH approximately 98,000 (10.84%) Rhode Island citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. 32,000 (3.52%) reported past year cocaine use. Additional 2003-2003 NSDUH results indicate that 32,000 (3.49%) Rhode Island citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 22,000 (2.41%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the NSDUH data approximately 14% Rhode Island 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 2,000 (1.93%) reported past year cocaine use.

Approximately 68.9 kilograms of cocaine were seized by Federal agencies in Rhode Island during 2005.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005 there were 12,206 admissions to alcohol/drug treatment in Rhode Island. 385 (3.2%) were for use of cocaine 1,225 (10%) for use of crack cocaine. According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data approximately 28,000 (3.06%) Rhode Island citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
