The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) completed surveys regarding the drug use in Mississippi and found that 79 or .9% of Mississippi's 9,140 state residents who admitted themselves into treatment for heroin. Not including the 2,126 state residents who admitted themselves into treatment for either opiates or more than one drug. Studies also show that 166,000 of Mississippi's citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment fort illicit drug and alcohol use in the past year. Surveys indicate that 1.8% of high school students polled had tried heroin at least one time in their lives. Heroin is considered a minimal drug threat in Mississippi due to the low demand and high cost of the drug. For fiscal year 2006, the State of Mississippi allocated $20.8 million for alcohol and drug treatment. Moreover, this funding is for treatment at state funded facilities only. Private programs are treating individuals as well without state subsidizing. The cost of treatment has increased 15 to 20 percent over the past five years. The projected increase in the cost of treatment is expected to continue at the same rate; however, this increase could change due to unforeseen events. The cost of treatment per person varies significantly, depending on the individual's needs.
