Symptoms Of Alcohol Dependency

Better Understand Alcohol Dependency Symptoms With Saint Jude Retreats

What Is Alcohol Dependency?

Symptoms Of Alcohol DependencyIf your alcohol use is out of control, it is important that you learn to recognize the symptoms of alcohol dependency. Dependency on alcohol simply means an individual has established a habitual use of substance. Dependency most plays a high role in regards to physical withdrawal symptoms which can be uncomfortable. Many people who try to quit drinking cannot bear the withdrawal and would rather have it quickly stop with drinking again, instead of working on the real problems behind their drinking. Understanding the signs may help you make the decision to seek assistance and overcome your excessive alcohol use.

It is not uncommon for some people to experience problems at work and school, such as excessive absences, frequent tardiness and missed assignments. Individuals struggling with alcohol dependence may also suffer difficulty in their relationships and home life. Other typical symptoms of alcohol dependency are changes in personality, feelings of shame and guilt, and a loss of goals and ambition because of excessive alcohol use.

Is There Habitual Alcohol Use?

If you or your loved one cannot quit their excessive alcohol consumption in spite of being met with problems at work, school, home or suffering legal and financial problems; that may be a good indicator that there is habitual alcohol use. In most cases, an individual that has frequent and excessive alcohol use may develop a tolerance to alcohol which means that it may require more with each use in order to achieve the same effect as with previous use.

The individual may also suffer withdrawal symptoms within a few hours to a few days after the last time they used alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms may include both physical symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, sweating and headache, loss of consciousness, increased heart rate and seizures, anxiety, depression and fatigue.

Physical Health

It is highly likely that the individual's health may be in a significant decline as a result of alcohol use. Excessive alcohol use can lead to organ damage or failure including heart, brain, liver and kidney. A symptom of alcohol dependency is that regardless of failing health, the individual will not stop their alcohol use.

Trying to hide or disguise their drinking is yet another sign; as in denying that there is a problem or making excuses for their drinking. Denial and excuses hinder the individual's ability to seek help for their alcohol habit.

If you or a loved one have any of the symptoms of alcohol dependency, it may be necessary to seek an alcohol program to quit. The most important thing to remember is that you can change your life and overcome alcohol use, not matter what situations you may have experienced in the past.
