Religion and Faith
A few Studies demonstrating the Benefits of religion:
Study at Duke University found that people who attend services at least once a week have stronger immune systems then those who didn't.
Study at Colorado University found that people who attend services frequently are likely to live an average of seven years longer.
Oxford University Press published an article analyzing 1,200 studies, 2/3 suggested some connection between religious involvement and better health.
Dr. Herbert Bensen of Harvard Medical School argues that regular repetitive prayer, along with general stress management reduces visits to health care professionals by 50 percent.
Elizabeth Bernstien, "Religion and Health: The Prayer Cure." Wall Street Journal, New York, NY, December 22, 2000; pg W.1
FAITH AND SOCIAL LIVES
"In the Dartmouth heart-surgery study... patients were asked two separate sets of questions about their participation in social groups and the comfort they drew from faith. The two factors appeared to have distinct benefits that made for a powerful combination. Those who were both religious and socially involved had a 14-fold advantage over those who were isolated or lacked faith." (Claudia Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.)
CHURCH ATTENDANCE
"--Numerous studies have found lower rates of depression and anxiety-related illness among the religiously committed. Non-churchgoers have been found to have a suicide rate four times higher then church regulars." (Claudia Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.)
MEDITATION
"Studies have shown that by routinely eliciting this "relaxation response," 75 percent of insomniacs begin to sleep normally, 35 percent of infertile women become pregnant and 34 percent of chronic pain sufferers reduce their use of painkilling drugs. (Claudis Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.)"
PLACEBO EFFECT AND BELIEF
"Decades of research show that if a patient truly believes a therapy is useful--even if it is a sugar pill or snake oil--that belief has the power to heal." (Claudia Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.)
Stats:
82 percent of Americans believe in the healing power of prayer (Claudia Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.) (Yankelovich Partners, 1996)
(Claudia Wallis, "Faith and Healing," Time Magazine. June 24, 1996.)
