Cocaine/crack cocaine in Florida

Over years cocaine has been Florida’s primary drug threat.
According to the NSDFUH approximately 1.1 million (7.7%) of Florida’s citizens (12 and older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. 360,000 (2.52%) reported past year cocaine use. Additional 2003-2004 NSDUH results indicate that 395,000 (2.75%) Florida citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the pat year. Approximately 254,000 (1.75%) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

Approximately 7% of High School students surveyed in 2005 reported selling drugs within the past year.  In 2005 31.1% high school students reported drug use.  5.6% high school students reported use of cocaine, 2% reported use of crack cocaine.

During 2005, Federal agencies seized 10,508.1 kilograms of cocaine. 846 (44.7%) of federally sentenced drug offenders were involved with cocaine. 338 were crack cocaine. At the end of July 2006 there were 88,650 inmates in Florida prisons. Of the inmates in the Florida prison system in 2005, 20.1% were drug offenders. Nearly half (49.9%) of the drug offenders admitted to prison in 2004-2005 had committed a manufacturing/sale/purchase offense. The remaining drug offenders had committed a trafficking (14%) or possession/other drug offense.

During 2005 there were 1,943 deaths in Florida in which cocaine was found in the body of deceased. In 1,443 of the cocaine-related death cases in Florida in 2005, the drug had been used in combination with at least one other substance.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2004 there were 74,150 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Florida. 14,857 (20.1%) were uses of cocaine/crack. According to 2003-2004 NSDUH data approximetly 375,000 (2.62) Florida citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
