Cocaine continues to be readily available in Texas.

According to the 2003-2004 NSDUH approximately 1.2 million (6.96%) Texas (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. 424,000 (2.41%) reported use of cocaine. Additional 2003-2004 NSDUH reported 505,000 (2.87%)Texas citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the last year. Approximately 323,000 (1.83 %) reported past year illicit drug dependence.

According to the NSDUH data approximately 193,000 (9.48%) Texas 12-17 year olds reported past month use of an illicit drug. 50,000 (2.45%) reported past year use of cocaine.

During 2005 Federal Agencies seized 16,431.1 kilograms of cocaine. During 2003, 41.7% of the federally sentenced defendants in Texas had committed a drug offense. More than 20% of the drug cases involved crack cocaine.

Who attempts at getting help

During 2005 there were 42,040 admissions to drug/alcohol treatment in Texas. 4,088 (9.7%) were for abuse of cocaine, 5,947(14.1%) for abuse of crack cocaine. According to the NSDUH data, approximately 461,000 (2.62%) Texas citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year.
