More than half the population of the U.S. engages in alcohol use, drug use or both and millions enter drug or alcohol detox to help them stop their substance use. If you are a substance user and are considering detox but want to know, will I be comfortable in drug or alcohol detox, here is some information on the different detox programs that are available.
Not everyone needs detox. Whether or not you need detox will depend on the type of substance you use, how often you have been using alcohol and drugs, the amount that you have been using and how long you have been using drugs and/or alcohol. If you are unsure whether or not you need drug or alcohol detox, you should consult with your doctor.
When you use substances continuously, toxins build in your system as a result of the substance use. The process of detoxification will eliminate those toxins, allow your system to rebalance itself and leave your system clean. It is not uncommon to experience withdrawal symptoms ranging from mild to severe when you quit your drug or alcohol use. How comfortable you are in drug or alcohol detox, will depend on the type of detox program you are using.
Drug and/or alcohol detox is available in outpatient, inpatient, medical or nonmedical programs. Nonmedical detox is a natural, holistic approach to substance use detoxification. It may include acupuncture, yoga, vitamin therapy and meditation therapy. Some individuals that prefer this method for detox will go on a mind, body and spirit retreat. While this method for drug and alcohol detox may work for some, it does not work for everyone and in some cases may not be safe.
Outpatient medical detox is a self reporting method that allows you to report to a doctor's office or to a clinic to receive medication that you may take at home to detox. Methadone, suboxone and subutex are the most common medications used in this type of detox. Methadone, suboxone and subutex are synthetic opioids in the same classification as vicodin, oxycodone and morphine. These drugs, called opiates, work on the central nervous system and block the opioid receptors which generate feelings of pain and contentment.
If you take methadone, suboxone or subutex as prescribed, then you will be able to stop taking the drug without experiencing additional withdrawal symptoms. However, research shows that some individuals begin taking methadone or suboxone and stay on it for longer periods of time beyond detox. Studies reveal that some individuals have been taking methadone for more than 20 years. Many report withdrawal symptoms for these drugs being more severe than for other opiates.
IV therapy medical detox is the method of detox that doctors agree is the most effective. IV therapy medical detox is doctor supervised and intravenous therapy is crucial at keeping patients comfortable in drug or alcohol detox because it allows the doctor to make changes to the medication as the withdrawal symptoms change for an immediate effect.

Theresa, Jim, Mark, Shannon, Renata, AlL the people at the St. Jude Retreats: I did not realize how much of an influence you all have had on my life until I have run into situations where I feel nothing is going right. In the each situation I have learned "from you" to look at the positive, in everything however small it may seem. Wow what a difference it makes focusing on the positive part of everything instead of the negative. I could give you numerous examples but they would be too lengthy to mention. Thank you again for teaching and coaching me to always look at the positive part of everything even if it only a small part of the total picture!More Testimonials Here
