Nicknamed the "Gateway to the West", Montgomery County is in a perfect New York location. Its river, turnpike, canal, and railroad transportation routes make the history here very rich. Central between Cooperstown and Saratoga Attractions, Montgomery County was involved in our nation's most important historical events. Abundant natural resources sustained the Mohawk tribal people. The Dutch, German, British and others arrived in the early 1700's. Montgomery County was at the center of many battles during the American Revolution. Postwar soldiers and pioneers traveled by river boats, then turnpike, and then by the Erie Canal to settle. With its location at "The Noses" of the Appalachian Mountains, Montgomery County is labeled America's main east-west axis, helping New York to become a great manufacturing region.
