The Village of Hagaman

"Nestled in the northern part of the Town of Amsterdam is the picturesque Village of Hagaman, one of the county's historic villages, named for Joseph Hagaman who first settled in the area in 1777. Hagaman came to this area from Dutchess County and was the son of Henry Hagaman, a native of Holland. He purchased 400 acres in the sparsely populated segment of that area which at that time was part of the large Caughnawaga District."

"The real early history of Hagaman and many of the other settlers of the area is not too well documented, as they arrived during the war, but many of the settlers fought on the side of the Colonists, and the graves of some of these heroes are found in the old Hagaman Cemetery where Joseph Hagaman and some of his family are buried."

"For many years the City of Amsterdam was known as the carpet capital of the nation, but this great industry in Amsterdam had its start in Hagaman."

"Industry continued to grow in the Hagaman area, with the knitting business leading the way. Star Hosiery Mills of H. Pawling and Son was the oldest establishment of this kind in the county. (The Pawling family were the builders of what is today the St. Jude Retreat House™.)"

"Today the village has industry in the form of a leather mill and a firm which manufactures insulation for home and industrial structures (Bonded Insulation Co.)."
