According to studies performed by the Office of Applied Studies, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 and 2004, the total number of people ages 12 and older in the state of Florida who used marijuana in the past year is 1,588,000. Of the 1,588,000, 217,000 were between the ages of 12 and 17. 470,000 past year marijuana users were of ages 18 to 25 and 900,000 were 26 and older. Total use of marijuana in the past month, according to the same survey, by people ages 12 and older is 919,000. 115,000 were ages 12 to 17, 279,000 were 18-25 and 526,000 were age 26 or older.
Marijuana use in Florida in the eyes of others seems to be the safer choice than choosing synthetic marijuana. In a nine month period in 2010, the National Poison Data System received 1,898 reports of health problems that consisted of some having seizures that caused brain damage and death and in 2011, there were 197 cases of synthetic marijuana overdoses. Most of the synthetic marijuana is manufactured in Asia and consists of over 11 different strains. Florida passed a new state law in 2011 that selling or having possession of more than 3 grams of the compound will be a third-degree felony and having three grams or less will be a misdemeanor.
