According to studies performed by the Office of Applied Studies, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 and 2004, the total number of people ages 12 and older in the state of Louisiana who used marijuana in the past year is 355,000. Of the 355,000, 53,000 were between the ages of 12 and 17. 148,000 past year marijuana users were of ages 18 to 25 and 154,000 were 26 and older. Total use of marijuana in the past month, according to the same survey, by people ages 12 and older is 1,652,000. 154,000 were ages 12 to 17, 136,000 were 18-25 and 1,361,000 were age 26 or older.
Marijuana use in Louisiana is still illegal but Louisiana just passed the new House Bill 103 on May 29, 2013 that will reduce marijuana possession penalties for second and subsequent offenses. As for medical marijuana use, they are trying to get the bill amended because marijuana offers medical benefits to many illnesses, diseases and those who live with unbearable pain.
