According to studies performed by the Office of Applied Studies, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 and 2004, the total number of people ages 12 and older in the state of Rhode Island who used marijuana in the past year is 137,000. Of the 137,000, 16,000 were between the ages of 12 and 17. 58,000 past year marijuana users were of ages 18 to 25 and 64,000 were 26 and older. Total use of marijuana in the past month, according to the same survey, by people ages 12 and older is 262,000. 28,000 were ages 12 to 17, 85,000 were 18-25 and 149,000 were age 26 or older.
There are many laws in the state of Rhode Island that protect those who use marijuana for medical reasons. Medical Marijuana in Rhode Island is legalized, by the Rhode Island's Medical Marijuana Act. Legalized medical marijuana is used to treat chronic pain or diseases which can include seizures, headaches, anxiety, chronic pain, Crohn's disease, and certain types of Cancer. Residents in the state of Rhode Island must need a written certification from their physician. Residents who have permission to carry marijuana can carry up to 2.5 oz on them. Patients may grow their own marijuana plants up to 12, and caregivers or physicians about to distribute medical marijuana can grow up to 24.
