While other programs may state that they are non 12-step based, any facility or program that is disease based, or body addictive based, or uses support programs and support meetings for after care is a believer in the 12-step paradigm. Don’t be fooled by facilities that claim to be non 12-step based, and use the methods described above. The St. Jude Retreat Houses™ are truly unique, in that we developed the JTP™ based on research. Our founders are researchers, not follow-the-crowd business people. The program was not brought to the international public until a full ten years of actual study and research was put into the method. The result today is the 11th edition of the JTP™ text, and a track record of success and experience that is the most effective in the treatment industry. Experience counts. Other programs are trying to fill beds by using many of the St. Jude Retreats key phrases in their marketing such as “alternative to 12-step program” and “addiction is not a disease.” Over the last twenty years, the Jude Thaddeus Program has led the treatment industry away from the disease model and the alternative treatment market grew based on the Jude Thaddeus Program’s success. However, these programs that copied our marketing have some fundamental flaws. For example, they talk of “cures” and they promote such ideas as the client’s powerlessness over substances. Talk of cures is a veiled reference to the disease model and powerlessness is a code word for 12-step religious programs. Understanding these code words it makes clear that the programs using these words are no different than the disease based and 12-step based programs they supposedly replace. The Jude Thaddeus Program has no such attachment to “dependency” or “addiction.” The Jude Thaddeus Program does not allow guests to remain a victim of their own choices and their supposed lack of control over their choices. Consider that even the most troubled crack abuser must make many decisions prior to scoring drugs. The act of getting high is not accomplished by a single compulsive thought. It is the result of many well thought out, “planned,” decisions (choices) to get the drug. The abuser must choose where to get the drugs, when to get the drugs, how to get the money to afford the drugs, find transportation to the dealer, etc., etc. This is not the passive act of a powerless, dependent person, but rather a very resourceful, crafty person who has chosen their path with deliberate determination. However, all other programs will paint them as a victim of their “choice based dependency.” Repetitive choices are just that, choices. Choices are not, and cannot, by definition, be predetermined events that the individual has little or no control over as the word “dependency” implies. You cannot have “choice dependency,” as other programs would like you to believe. “Choice” and “dependency” are mutually exclusive ideas. The Jude Thaddeus Program exposes the guest’s excuses for what they are. This provides the guest with the opportunity to explore other more positive options that will bring new joy and lasting happiness. Without other options, a person will continue to make the same choices because they have had some benefit from their limited choices of the past. The Jude Thaddeus Program reverses this trend with proper education and the presentation of positive options. In the end, individuals are either able to make their own choices or are convinced that they are truly powerless to choose. Which would you rather be? This is the fundamental difference between the Jude Thaddeus Program and all 12-step and non-12-step based programs. We have proven for more than twenty years that the most desperate of people are able to choose new avenues to happiness and joy. |
