Having a parent that is addicted to cocaine can be distressing. You may want them to get help, but you are not sure if they need cocaine rehab or treatment and what type of support is available to them. Of course the important factor is whether or not your parent wants to stop using cocaine. If they are not interested in quitting their use, then you may have an uphill battle ahead of you; however, if they want to stop their cocaine use, then here is some helpful information.
Cocaine is a water soluble drug and as such it does not have physical dependency characteristics and there is no physical withdrawal. Therefore, your parent will not need to detoxify from their cocaine use. Your parent with a cocaine problem can however benefit from a non 12 step program that can offer support to help them address the reasons for their cocaine use and also help them make a plan for quitting their substance use.
For many individuals that are trying to be successful in their sobriety, telling them that they are going to fail may not be very encouraging to them. 12 step programs also teach that the only treatment available is belief in a higher power, treatment for the rest of your life and abstinence; which they also say you will fail at. With this in mind, your parent may find, as does a large number of 12 step members that if they are doomed to fail, why bother trying to stay off drugs.
An alternative to 12 step programs, will definitely be a best option for your parent. By offering education rather than treatment; your parent will have greater chances of success. Additionally these programs offer a variety of extracurricular activities, such as yoga or hiking. These activities can provide an outlet for your parent's desire to use cocaine.
