In December of 1989 my life was in ruins. I was supposed to be ending the first semester of my senior year in undergraduate school, but instead was facing failing out of my second attempt in college. As I left school to come home for a family Christmas, it was then I told my mother that I was giving up; she thought I meant giving up on school.

In 1986 I was a typical successful high school senior. I had lettered in varsity sports, kept an overall average of B or better, managed my high school yearbook and was inducted into the National Honor Society. My parents, teachers and friends had high hopes for my future, yet I was completely terrified. I began having intensive anxiety attacks but told no one. During this time I also began experimenting with alcohol and drugs. As I left high school and entered college, drinking and using drugs became my only recreational outlet. I quickly went from weekend “partying” to daily use and found myself on academic probation after achieving a 1.8 during my first semester.

My college career became a series of semesters alternating on and off academic probation. The once successful student had vanished and was replaced by a person whose sole priority in life was to feel good at any cost. The problem quickly became that I only felt good when I was getting high. My whole life centered on the act of getting high. I did it alone, in a group, in the morning, afternoon and evening, most days of the week.

As a psychology major, I was learning all about the disease called addiction and I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that I suffered from this incurable disease. Unfortunately I also learned that my prognosis was grim, and after just three short years of drug abuse, and at the tender age of 21 years old, I had lost all hope for my future.

It was then that suicide became a viable option for me and I made a plan to take my own life while home on Christmas break. I could never live up to my parents’ expectations of me; I was a failure and that was that.

Today I am 40 years old, a mother of three, in a wonderful marriage that has spanned more than 15 years and am the President of Baldwin Research Institute, Inc. So how does a person go from hopeless and suicidal at 21 to happy and successful at 40? It’s quite simple actually; they learn the truth about addiction and about themselves which enables them to make informed decisions regarding their own lives. Thankfully my father had already overcome his substance abuse problem when I was just 10 years old and he told me that what I had learned in college was unequivocally wrong. There was no disease called addiction and that I could do and become anything that I wanted in life. He told me that my future was solely up to me and he would help me to change my life if that is what I wanted to do. It was at that time I became part of the pilot study that has developed into the most successful program for substance abuse in the country, The Jude Thaddeus Program.

There is so much more to this story that cannot be contained here, but if I wanted you to know just one thing about me, it would be that I am here today because I learned the truth about addiction and did not admit myself to a traditional treatment program. I am not a “recovering addict” or “in recovery” I did not have an imaginary disease. I was making poor choices and those poor choices defined my life 20 years ago, they certainly do not define my life today nor should they.

You can overcome substance abuse forever! There is no addiction disease, there are only lifestyle choices. If you feel as if you have lost control of your life, then you have because you define your own life. You are what you think! But feeling helpless is a temporary condition brought on by a lack of information and motivation – the Jude Thaddeus Program is designed to educate, inspire and motivate you to build the life you have always wanted; the life of your dreams.  Please call us to find out how the Jude Thaddeus Program can help you or your loved one. We are here to help you in any way that we can.
