Based on combined data from SAMHSA's 2004-2005 National Surveys on Drug Use & Health, the rate of past year alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older varied by level of alcohol use: 44.7% of past month heavy drinkers, 18.5% binge drinkers, 3.8% past month non-binge drinkers, and 1.3% of those who did not drink alcohol in the past month met the criteria for alcohol dependence or abuse in the past year. Males had higher rates than females for all measures of drinking in the past month: any alcohol use (57.5% vs. 45%), binge drinking (30.8% vs. 15.1%), and heavy alcohol use (10.5% vs. 3.3%). Also, males were twice as likely as females to have met the criteria for alcohol dependence or abuse in the past year (10.5% vs. 5.1%).
The numbers keep growing every day for addiction to Alcohol. You read it in the newspapers and see it on TV. Politicians keep talking about getting more money for treatment. The question is if treatment worked for Alcohol addiction, wouldn’t the number of people addicted to Alcohol be going down?
Finding the right help for Alcohol addiction in Kentucky can be done. Treatment isn’t the answer with its high rates of relapse. In addition, treatment teaches you to live a life devoted to preventing addiction instead of leaving it behind you. It’s impossible to end addiction when you spend your time thinking how to make your life smaller to avoid it. You are, in essence, putting the addiction at the center of your life and in charge of what you do and don’t do. Leaving Alcohol in charge of your life is a recipe for relapse.
If you’ve attended traditional treatment, or even just heard about 12 Step or treatment programs, you probably have been told that addiction is a life sentence to a cycle of recovery and relapse. Treatment would have you believe that so you will accept returning to treatment again and again, particularly after relapse. Treatment programs promise relapse as a certainty because their focus is abstinence alone. You are told to fear your “triggers” of use and any stress until your world is very small and centered on fighting off that inevitable relapse. Relapse is inevitable if you are relying on treatment’s limited help for change. In Kentucky alone, of the 2,448 people seeking help for Alcohol, 56.1% or 1,373 relapse in just one year. If treatment were the only alternative this would be terrible news but luckily there is a proven effective alternative.
While it’s clear that treatment doesn’t work from research and statistics, an effective solution is available.
