The citizens of Missouri have recognized that they have problems with illicit drugs and marijuana. According to the Missouri Statistical Analysis Center and Department of Public Safety in 2012, they had 10,145 admissions to drug and alcohol detox centers that were in there for marijuana use. Out of that number, 73.6% were male and 26.4% were female. In addition to this, 65% were Caucasion, 30.1% were African-American, and 4.7% were either American Indian or of a different race. 83.4% of this amount were 17 years of age and older and 16.6% were younger than 16 years old.
In 2011, the Department of Mental Health stated that 40% of the 2,679 patients having cocaine dependency were female, 59.9% were African American, 36.1% were Caucasion and 99.3% were 17 years of age and older. Also in 2011, Missouri law enforcement agencies reported that they had 27,426 drug arrests and 23,404 of those were for drug possession and 4,022 were for selling or manufacturing drugs. The Juvenile Court Referral Information System reported that in 2010 they had 33,660 referrals of which 73.9% were for possession of drugs and 26.1% for selling and distributing drugs.
The state of Missouri is also involved in the Above the Influence National Anti-Drug Campaign that helps youths reject drug and alcohol use in their local communities. The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has also given Missouri grants for funding nine Drug Free Communities (DFC) Programs and have the Midwest HIDTA that helps fund 16 enforcement task forces and three intelligence groups. HIDTA has intelligence centers which offer state-of-the-art technology to help aid in developing and sharing information with non-participating and participating law enforcement agencies. In 2009, they seized 1,495 meth labs which was higher than any other state in the United States.
