Making the decision to get help for substance abuse is a difficult one to make and the decision was most likely reached after the encouragement and promised support of your family. As you look for a program to help you overcome your substance abuse, it is important that you enter a program that will allow and encourage continued family support, but will also offer assistance to your family as well.
There are many different types of rehab treatment and alternative programs to help you and your family to overcome substance abuse. Traditional programs, such as 12 Step programs, offer family meetings in addition to the member meetings. 12 Step philosophy promotes the idea that substance abuse is a disease that is passed down through families. For some families that may be difficult to hear, especially if no one else in the family has substance abuse issues.
12 Step programs also teach that there is no cure for substance abuse and that the only treatment available is the substance user surrendering to a higher power, abstinence (which the individual will not be able to ever fully achieve because relapse is a guarantee) and lifelong therapy and meeting attendance. These ideas are also very difficult for some families to grasp because they imply that there is no hope for their loved one.
While 12 Step programs do work for some individuals, they do not work for everyone. The programs promote the fact that they have more than 2 million members enrolled; however they also have a 95 percent dropout rate and although there have been countless studies conducted as to their true success value, there is no conclusive data to support if they are successful at all. For families struggling with substance abuse issues, trying to gain help for the family in the midst of this uncertainty can be frustrating.
An alternative to traditional 12 Step programs' substance abuse family help is a program that approaches substance abuse through Cognitive Behavioral Learning (CBL). Freedom Model Retreats is a non 12 Step, non treatment program that is nothing like traditional alcohol or drug rehab centers. The six week educational program teaches guests to use self assessment and self change to reevaluate their decisions and choices. Guests learn to make choices that are more productive and to develop habits and behaviors that are positive and enriching to their lives.
The Retreats program helps guests to realize that they are not diseased, but that they have the power to overcome their substance abuse. Our guests are empowered to change and they discover that they can plan for a future that does not include drugs and alcohol. Family members have access to the Freedom Model Corner, a website that is designed to allow our guests' family members to follow along in the program with their loved one.
Freedom Model Retreats sees the immense value that comes with including the family in the process of change. Freedom Model Corner features sample lesson plans, daily schedules, social activities, and menus. The Family Consultant and Program Directors are available to answer any questions that the family may have during the program and Freedom Model Retreats offers a family day every Sunday where family members are invited to visit and enjoy Sunday brunch together. Freedom Model Retreats also has an exclusive Family Program that is intended for family members of the substance user that is currently enrolled or completed the Freedom Model Retreats program.
