According to studies performed by the Office of Applied Studies, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 and 2004, the total number of people ages 12 and older in the state of California who used marijuana in the past year is 3,222,000. Of the 3,222,000, 443,000 were between the ages of 12 and 17. 1,109,000 past year marijuana users were of ages 18 to 25 and 1,670,000 were 26 and older. Total use of marijuana in the past month, according to the same survey, by people ages 12 and older is 1,850,000. 241,000 were ages 12 to 17, 631,000 were 18-25 and 978,000 were age 26 or older.
California was the first state in the United States to open up a marijuana shop along with many other stores and centers, specifically the Harborside Health Center which has been helping over 100,000 patients who have valid prescriptions to help them with serious medical issues. Also, where these medical marijuana shops are located, they bring in about $1.4 million dollars in medical pot sales tax and now the Federal government is trying to shut this center down along with many others. If this happens, there will be a major health crisis for those who can no longer get their prescriptions filled.
