According to studies performed by the Office of Applied Studies, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2003 and 2004, the total number of people ages 12 and older in the state of Hawaii who used marijuana in the past year is 115,000. Of the 115,000, 19,000 were between the ages of 12 and 17. 37,000 past year marijuana users were of ages 18 to 25 and 59,000 were 26 and older. Total use of marijuana in the past month, according to the same survey, by people ages 12 and older is 69,000. 11,000 were ages 12 to 17, 21,000 were 18-25 and 37,000 were age 26 or older.
Marijuana use in Hawaii is the big current topic. On June 25, 2013, Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed two bills that will affect Hawaii's medical marijuana program. It will make certain that the program will be run by health professionals and the law enforcement will not have control of the program. The patients will be able to now have four ounces of marijuana instead of three, they will be able to have up to seven plants at any growth stage they choose, and will need to get a recommendation from their physician saying it will be benefit them. This new law will not take effect until January 2, 2015.
Treatment and rehab centers for marijuana in Hawaii have not always been helpful to all who have wanted to change their lifestyle. There are now non-12 step programs that will give you the freedom to make your own decisions and what you feel is best for yourself or loved one.
